Reversal Clues

A reversal clue asks you to read a word or set of letters backwards to produce the answer. The indicator signals that something should be reversed, and the fodder is the word whose letters need flipping.

How to identify reversal clues

Reversal indicators suggest backward movement. In across clues, look for 'back', 'returned', or 'reversed'. In down clues, look for 'up', 'rising', or 'over'. The fodder is usually a recognisable word that becomes another word when reversed.

Very well done, but occupied by texting right now…(5)

Definition
Our definition here is 'Very well done', and our answer will be a word that can also mean 'very well done', in certain contexts.
Indicator
This clue's indicators are 'occupied by', and 'texting'. 'texting' is a kind of translation indicator where we have to translate some neighbouring fodder into text-speak. If you don't know much text-speak, feel free to look it up! And 'occupied by' is a containing indicator - some fodder will be occupied by and house other fodder.
Fodder
This clue's fodder is 'but' and 'right now'. We'll need to find a specific kind of substitute for one of these and use it with the letters of the other to construct our answer, as guided by the clue's indicator(s).

This clue's fodder is 'Boat', 'life-ring' and 'orca'. We'll need to find a short substitute for one of these and use it with the letters of the others to construct our answer, as guided by the clue's indicator(s).

Definition
Our definition here is 'Swimming group', and our answer will be a word for a group of swimmers.
Indicator
This clue's indicators are 'cleared of', 'after', 'second', and 'evacuation?'. Two of these are deletion indicators that work in different ways. "cleared of" sits between two pieces of fodder and asks us to delete one from the other. 'evacuation' pairs with a selection indicator - in this case 'second' - to specify what to delete. And 'after' is a simple repositioning indicator - some fodder will appear after other fodder.
Fodder
This clue's fodder is 'pool', 'pee', and 'such'. We'll use the letters of two of these, along with a short substitute for the other to construct our answer, as guided by the clue's indicator(s). Extra hint: for this clue, it helps to know how letters are spelled...

Practice tips

1Try writing suspect words backwards — the answer may jump out immediately.
2In down clues, 'up' is a reversal indicator; in across clues, 'back' is more common.
3The fodder might be a synonym rather than a literal word from the clue.
4Short words (3-5 letters) are the most common targets for reversals.
