Reversal Clues

A reversal clue asks you to read a word or set of letters backwards to produce the answer. The indicator signals that something should be reversed, and the fodder is the word whose letters need flipping.

How to identify reversal clues

Reversal indicators suggest backward movement. In across clues, look for 'back', 'returned', or 'reversed'. In down clues, look for 'up', 'rising', or 'over'. The fodder is usually a recognisable word that becomes another word when reversed.

Definition

Indicator
This clue's indicators are 'divided', 'over', and 'the shape of'. One of these is a selection indicator flagging that instead of taking all the letters of a neighbouring word, we need to take just a fraction. Another is a containing indicator - some letters will go around some other fodder. And a third is a homoglyph indicator guiding us to pay attention to what an item in the clue looks like and to find a lookalike letter.

Fodder
This clue's fodder is 'simplicity'. We'll use these letters (or some of them) to construct our answer, as guided by the clue's indicator(s).
